Spitsbergen Adventure Cruise

Please go to the 2006 cruises index

Five days of adventure, with a visit to Longyearbyen and a voyage on the MS Nordstjernen along the North-West coast of Spitsbergen with its beautiful fjords surrounded by jagged peaks and huge glaciers.

Spitsbergen's Jagged Peaks

Spitsbergen is the largest island in the Svalbard Archipelago. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the west coast, some 400 kilometres long, is surprisingly rich in wildlife and in places you'll see some quite luxuriant vegetation, with tiny beautiful flowers growing amongst the rocks. Historical monuments are found all along the coast and give testimony to a heroic polar history. The Dutch explorer, Willem Barents first saw this coastline in 1596, and the impressive peaks inspired the name Spitsbergen.

Typical houses

The MS Nordstjernen cruises northbound from Longyearbyen to Moffen Island and during your stay on board you'll experience the stark beauty of the Svalbard landscape and hopefully see some Arctic mammals like whales and the king of the Arctic - the polar bear.

An Impressive Glacier

During the voyage our guides will host some informal lectures to complement our shore visits, most of which will be by Zodiac and we aim to make one landing per day. You'll also spend some time in Longyearbyen where you'll learn about the history of the area and life here today.
